West Hollywood

West Hollywood is L.A.’s mecca of what is “hot” and “of-the-minute.” WeHo, as it is often called, is bordered on the north by the Hollywood Hills, on the east by Hollywood, on the west by the City of Beverly Hills, and on the south by the Beverly Center area. West Hollywood benefits from a very dense, compact urban form with small lots, a mix of land uses, and a walkable street grid. Commercial corridors are mixed throughout the area and include the nightlife and dining focused on the Sunset Strip, along Santa Monica Boulevard, and the Avenues of Art & Design along Robertson, Melrose and Beverly near the Pacific Design Center. Major residential neighborhoods in West Hollywood include the Norma Triangle, West Hollywood North, West Hollywood West, West Hollywood East and West Hollywood Heights. The city breaks down eleven preferential parking zones, which further define residential areas. Major intersecting streets provide amenities within walking distance of adjacent neighborhoods. The western stretch of Melrose Avenue, between Fairfax and Doheny is notable for its high-end clothing boutiques, interior design shops, restaurants and antique stores – culminating with the well-known Melrose Place shopping area. The west end of Melrose Avenue, near the Pacific Design Center, is especially known for its exclusive furniture stores. The area around Fountain Avenue, Harper Avenue and Havenhurst Drive contains a high concentration of landmark 1920s Spanish Revival and Art Deco apartment buildings by such noted architects as Leland Bryant. Always at the front of any social and community issue, West Hollywood adopted one of the nation’s first mandatory green building ordinances on October 1, 2007. The ordinance ensures that new buildings will be healthier for residents, and use energy and resources more efficiently. During 2010’s “window of opportunity” West Hollywood’s City Hall performed 1,000’s of gay marriages. Besides its homes, usually on smaller lots, West Hollywood has a variety of both charming condominium buildings and also full-service, luxury high-rise condo buildings which are popular with celebrities and high-profile residents.
